Iron Man is an example of a perfectly executed comic book to film adaptation. Robert Downie Jr is Tony Stark. The role was written for him and he nailed it. The effects were simply amazing – they couldn’t have done a better job on the suit. I want one. The film was filled with little nods to the fans, including more than a few nods that are guaranteed to deliver down the line (stick around after the credits), all while staying true to the source material. There were no retarded dance scenes. No horrible costume “reinterpretations”. Nothing to cringe over at all. It was what a comic book movie should be.

This is the beginning of what could be a very exciting evolution in the comic book movie genre. Instead of seeing individual Spider-man movies, or hulk movies, where the characters are very much separate from the rest of the Universe, we might start seeing movies where other Marvel heroes make cameo appearances in each others films.

Imagine Spider-Man is facing a whole league of villains that he can’t possibly handle it on his own, so he goes to enlist the help of Daredevil or the Fantastic Four. We might even start seeing movies based on events in the Marvel Universe. Imagine watching the Marvel Civil War on the big screen…

If the Avengers movie is a success, it could change everything. It could bring what we see on screen that much closer to what we read in the comic books – which is simply an awesome thing in my mind (if handled correctly).
