So Here’s Your Future

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Quite a lot has happened since I last updated. We found an apartment in the city, right on Flinders street not far from Flinders Street Station. I was meant to move in last weekend but there’s been some kind of delay with the banks. Hopefully we’ll be able to get in there to paint early Jan.

The apartment itself is quite nice. It’s a spacious single bedroom apartment on the second floor of a heritage listed building. Rather than try to describe the space I’ll wait until I move in to take some photos. It really is perfect; I’m extremely excited about moving in.

That said I am sad to be leaving this house. Looking back there are so many memories here. It really hit me after the auction ended and the house had officially sold. I sat on the couch looking outside and the memories came flooding back.

That first year after high school ended, when everything changed. So little from that time still exists. Abdulla, Michaela, Charlie. Relationships that had a huge impact on my life came and went while living in this house. Soon it, like them, will be gone too. Still standing, but no longer mine.

Work is going well. There was a permanent position available which I applied for but unfortunately didn’t get. Apparently Sensis has a policy that awards permanent employee’s priority over temps when applying for positions so nobody in our team got the position. I was however short listed, which I consider an achievement however meaningless it may be.

My computer died, or at least the hard drive did, so with my birthday approaching and my computer being quite dated I decided it was a good time to upgrade. After a considerable delay it finally arrived. The Antec P182 looks fantastic alongside my dual dell flat screen monitors and I am now able to play the latest games the industry has to offer. Call Of Duty 4 Looks incredible, and games that looked great on my old computer now look even better.

On the topic of gaming, Mario Galaxy exceeded my high expectations. It looks sounds and plays like a Mario game should. I also played through Metroid Prime: Corruption between sessions of Galaxy, which was impressive in it’s own right and provided a nice contrast to the quirky bright visuals of Galaxy. It was nice to finally make use of my Wii, which was collecting dust up until that point.

I also just finished with Half Life 2: Episode 1,2 and Portal. All of which were amazing. I can see why people are calling Portal “game of the year”. It really is a unique experience unlike anything that’s come before it. I really need to get online and test out Team Fortress, but I’ve either been too tired or too busy to devote the time needed to get into it.

My now ex-team leader Nick recommended that I watch the new tv show Dexter, which I did, mainly to see if I looked anything like the main character after he kept insisting we look alike. I still don’t see the resemblance, but I did end up enjoying the first season. The show is about a serial killer who works as a blood spatter expert for the Miami Police Department. I can’t say much more without spoiling anything, but it’s definitely a ride worth taking through to the finale. You can check out the first season on dvd.

Following the success of Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 8, Angel: After the Fall, the semi-canonical follow up to TV’s Angel Season 5 was released recently. Being a fan of Angel, I was dying to know what happened after the suicide battle with Wolfram & Hart in the alleyway behind the Hyperion.

So how is it? Honestly, I like where they’ve gone with the storyline. The end of season five left the fang gang in bad shape, the writers really had no safe way out for most of the characters. So things are interesting. However, the artwork leaves a lot to be desired, which unfortunately leaves me wishing more than I already did that I was experiencing these storylines on television, with actual actors, instead of through sub-par artwork on the printed page. That said, I’d prefer this to nothing at all.

Pitchfork Media just posted their top 50 albums of the year and I was surprised to see how many of my favorites made the list. It really has been a great year for music, so in honor of this fact and in the hope of spreading the word about some of my favorite artist – I present to you my top ten albums of 2007.

The Maccabees - Colour It In

Top Nine Albums 2007

The Maccabees – Colour It In, Radiohead – In Rainbows, Burial – Untrue, MIA – Kala, Kanye West – Graduation, Of Montreal – Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?, Wu-Tang Clan – 8 Diagrams, Lupe Fiasco – The Cool, Interpol – Our Love To Admire & My Brightest Diamond – Bring Me The Workhorse.

Christmas was a bit of a non-event. We ate our usual turkey, played some Wii Sports and watched National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. Gift giving was strangely reversed, with my parents receiving DVD’s and video games while I received cooking gear for my kitchen.

Anyway I was sure I had more to write about. Topics such as my birthday, my past two short-lived relationships (if you can even call them that) and the few nights I’ve gone out drinking all seem a little irrelevant now that they are so over and inconsequential. I’ll try to keep the site up to date now that I have a computer again, but there’s also the possibility that I might not have internet at the new appartment when I move in, so no promises.
