It’s official. My parents are moving to Queensland. They have put the house on the market and we are in the process of finding an apartment that they will buy for me to live in so that I can stay in Melbourne.
We’ve looked at several places in the city, the most promising of which goes to auction two weeks from now, the same day that our house is open for inspection.
Real estate photos are probably the most deceiving product advertising I’ve ever seen. One apartment that looked great in all of the online photographs turned out to be far smaller than I expected, had water damage to the floor boards, and was quite run down, while another that appeared to be extremely small and plain turned out to be the most spacious and promising of the lot. You really can’t tell what to expect until you visit the location first hand.
I’m trying to keep my feelings in check during this entire process, looking objectively at the pros and cons of each property while not getting attached to anything until the papers have all been signed and I’m living in it. This is easier said than done obviously, but I think it’s a skill I’ve come to master over the years.
In preparation for the inspection and eventually the move, I’ve individually wrapped all of my Kubrick’s (not an easy task believe me), bubble wrapped and boxed all my consoles, and disposed of all the (perfectly legal) street signs that were stored in both my rooms. Things look a bit bare, but that’s the idea.
I’m a cocktail of extremely excited with a splash of anxious right now, but I’ll get into that and why I decided to stay some other time.
