You might need to sit down for this one. No really. For those of you who use your computers standing, I strongly suggest you take a seat.
I have a job.
After an intimidating two hour group interview it turns out I’m fit to work in a big shiny office building, nine to five, creating the yellow online listings for Sensis. I have a keycard. And an elevator. And I go on lunch breaks.
I’ve been in training since Monday with a team of nine learning an ungodly amount of information so that I can navigate my way around the several in-house programs used to create and manage the content of Yellow Online.
The successful applicants were split up into two groups, data and design, with the plan to cross-train each so eventually we will all be able to complete an entire listing start to finish independently. I got put in the data team, so I was disappointed at first and then extremely intimidated.
When I heard “data entry” I thought it would be simple like filling out an online form, but it’s actually really complicated, with several programs working together that require you to have an active knowledge of all the product plans, how listings work and … and.. acronyms. Lots of them. Everything, no matter how much easier it would be to name it something simple goes by an acronym. I still don’t understand it all completely, but I’m feeling a lot more confident than I was that first day. The first day I felt like crying.
Everyone I’ve met at Sensis so far has been extremely friendly and our trainer Rachel is making listening to fairly dry information as entertaining as humanly possible. A workmate and I played Mario Kart 64 via an emulator today, we can leave and get coffee whenever we want, and the team leader came in and complimented my Nintendo t-shirt… I can wear a Nintendo t-shirt. From what I’ve seen so far, the environment is going to be very relaxed, but I’ll reserve all expectations until after Ive actually started working. This is training after all.
I got the album artwork back from Hoax Funeral a few weeks ago, but It’s difficult to photograph it through the CD case so I’m going to wait until I have the right equipment before I upload any photos. I was quite happy with how it turned out, despite a few errors that should have been easily avoided had the printers actually done their jobs correctly (yes im blaming the printers… possibly unjustly).
Anyway, it’s satisfying to see a product you’ve created digitally finally come together in front of you in a physical format. The downside of that, compared to digital media like a website for example, is that it’s final and I have to live with its flaws forever. But it’s still satisfying.
Anyway, I’ll try to keep this thing updated. My time is kind of limited now (waking up is not getting any easier and I’ve made a pitiful amount of progress through the games I am playing) but work isn’t that tiring. I’m not lifting anything heavy and I’m fine if I stay fueled with food and coffee throughout the day. Things are looking good.
